Catalog of the exhibition at Dialogue Gallery, Paris, 1997
Aníbal Merlo is an artist born in Buenos Aires (1949) who resides in Spain since 1974. Originally a painter, some years ago he developed also an intense and already consolidated activity in the field of sculpture that has been appraised very positively. He regularly realizes exhibitions in Madrid, city in which he lives and works at present. He realized also individual exhibitions in Germany, Austria, Belgium and Argentina.

His wish for capturing the mystery of what has been led me many years ago, in the beginnings of his journey, to qualify Aníbal Merlo as a romantic artist. It has been confirmed in his coherent interior evolution that increasingly delves deeply into the puzzle of nature, the action of time on her and on the objects of culture. A process that supposes putting in practice a historical-natural dialectic centered on very concrete targets. In his painting, this development takes him to wise plastic results, on horseback of an abstraction and a diffuse imagining not exempt of geometry. From his beginnings, evocation of dreamed sceneries was the principal topic of his pictures, where a permanent dialogue that still persists was established between sky and ground. From that plastic speech it was given up largely the expressionist influence and the treatment of matter. Forms of flatter texture, lightened of matter, fill this vacancy, highlighting the warm ocher, yellow, blue and roses. Visions of reinvented nature reach now a more ambitious dimension centered on the cartography of fancied worlds, substituting previous sceneries. It already doesn’t give priority to the image as direct representation of the world, but as the rationalized measurement and arrangement of it. Imaginary maps parade before our surprised eyes of fantastic continents, islands and magic constellations. This daydream cartography possesses the naivety of medieval maps, along with the distant panorama of the air sight. Time is tackled like a factor of genesis, trajectory, and trip in the illumination of things, which show its gradual growth, its different stages of development, snapshots of its happening, its transit and declining, its impulses and discontinuous and intermittent advances. Time records the progressive display of existence, as the sum of the concentric rings in the trunk of a tree, reveals its age to us.

All these resonances are accentuated in his sculptures in wood - emancipated daughters from his painting - of elaborate manufacturing, harmonious conjugation of curves and straight lines that do not resign to a right and personal chromatic treatment. Handled constructions that evoke the forms of fossilized nature, and at the same time objects-symbols that well might be traces of remote civilizations for deciphering, from which we only possess their fragments: the eventful traces written in time. Those are pieces with archaeological reminiscences, where Cronos has left his stamp, embellishing and concealing, in his incomplete current existence, his atavistic and hypothetical function. In this way, nature penetrates in history and the cultural modality transforms in something natural. Time, integrated like any other element, is for Aníbal Merlo an eloquent speaker, the maker who carves and wears out, that prints and erases, that constructs strata and sedimentations, works forms and caves, that erodes the matter up until breaking it, and provokes gaps and cavities. Wood returns in millennial rock perforated by the constant action of water. Coming from his canvas, there persist traces of other lives, of animal and vegetable reminiscence: zigzagging snakes, slender leaves. To the biological chronology, there are added tracks that mark the different stretches of an aimlessly wandering. Strange implements and mysterious marks remain printed like halt moments of unknown courtships, of mysterious peregrinations that point to routes towards unknown places. All of them are tracks for the shrewd explorer. The one who can interpret them will find the footpath. Aníbal Merlo, like a demiurge, leaves to man his dreamed universe. He confirms the ravages of the passage of time in his natural paradise, registers the documentary remains of his kingdom and makes maps to know his domains. Everything invites to the trip. Force and lyricism are allied and push us to the adventure, to take part in the discovery of a novel mythology.
